Citric acid is a weak organic acid, and it is a natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic, or sour, taste to foods and soft drinks. 
In biochemistry, it is important as an intermediate in the citric acid cycle and therefore occurs in the metabolism of virtually all living things. 
It can also be used as an environmentally benign cleaning agent.

檸檬酸是由柑橘汁或檸檬汁等果中提取，在乾果子中約含有8%的檸檬酸，是一種弱酸。可稀釋10%-20%於水中，再用作加入產品中來調節產品的酸鹼度。它亦是一種自然的防腐劑和抗氧化劑。使用分量不可超過10%，及在酸鹼度不低於3.5值為安全，可直接加入在乳霜及乳液，化妝水，洗髮液，沐浴液，精華液中等。浸浴的氣泡彈做法：先將清水10毫升與香薰油3滴混合，再將檸檬酸25克、梳打粉50克與少量浴鹽混合後，逐少加進混合液。將材料填進膠模內，待涼15分鐘後起出，最後以乾毛巾蓋好風乾12小時便成。
